THE LIGHTHOUSE KEEPER WHO DIED TRYING TO GET HOME FOR CHRISTMAS… BUT MAY NEVER HAVE LEFT THE REEF

Just days before Christmas in 1916, the sea around Penfield Reef Lighthouse in Connecticut was violent.

Head lighthouse keeper Frederick A. Jordan had one thing on his mind…

He wanted to get home to his family for Christmas.

On 22 December, despite the dangerous winter conditions, Frederick climbed into a small boat and began rowing towards the mainland.

He never made it.

Around 150 yards from the lighthouse, his boat capsized in the enormous waves.

Assistant keeper Rudolph Iten watched helplessly from the lighthouse. He attempted to launch another boat, but the wind and sea were simply too powerful.

Frederick disappeared into the freezing water.

But according to the stories that followed…

he came back.

Not long after Frederick’s death, Rudolph reported seeing a strange grey, glowing figure emerge from Frederick’s former room.

It hovered near the top of the stairs…

then disappeared into the darkness below.

Rudolph initially thought it was the other lighthouse keeper.

It wasn’t.

When he went downstairs, he discovered something even more disturbing.

The lighthouse logbook had apparently been moved.

It was lying open.

And of all the pages it could have opened to…

it was open to 22 December 1916 — the entry recording Frederick Jordan’s death.

Rudolph would later claim that he wasn’t the only person to see the mysterious figure. Other keepers reportedly witnessed it too.

But perhaps the strangest part of the legend is what happened out on the water.

Stories began circulating of a mysterious man appearing near the dangerous reef when vessels were in trouble — seemingly helping guide people away from danger before vanishing.

One old account even tells of two boys whose canoe overturned near the reef. A mysterious man reportedly appeared and pulled them to safety.

When they went to the lighthouse afterwards to thank their rescuer…

there was nobody there.

The legend says they later recognised the man from a photograph.

It was Frederick Jordan.

A lighthouse keeper who lost his life trying to cross those waters…

perhaps spending the afterlife making sure others don’t suffer the same fate.

More than a century later, Penfield Reef Lighthouse still stands alone against the waters of Long Island Sound.

And when storms roll across the reef, some mariners still tell of a keeper who appears where no living man should be…

watching.

Waiting.

And perhaps still keeping the light.
